Figure: Teddy coming to the island.

Shutter Island film is based on Dennis Leahan’s bestseller novel of the same name. It depicts the story of Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshall, who comes to the island to investigate the case of the missing patient – Rachel Solando -from the island.

However, as the case progresses Teddy discovers that there is alot more to the island and the institution than meets the naked eye. He believes that the practitioners experiment on people/patients at the island. In a bid to escape the horrors of the island, hiding from the storm, and the institution, Teddy says to his friend Chuck inside the Mausoleum,  “…it’s pretty clear…they’re experimenting on people here.” The detective, eventually, finds himself trapped in an investigation, a game, of a different nature altogether and tries to leave the island but invain. Inside the prison castle,  in Ward C, Teddy finds his lost friend George Noyce on whom the institutio

n had already carried and tried-and-tested many horrific mental and physical experiments. He tells Teddy that the hospital knew whatever he (Teddy) had been upto… everything. George reveals the true secrets of the island  to Teddy and  says, “They knew… your whole plan. This is a game. A stage play. All this…is for you (Teddy).”

After watching the film, I noticedthat some viewers seemed to be puzzled ,and somewhat thrilled, by the film’s ending. People at work started having a discussion about it’s ending – that it’s too confusing, too complicated. I thought I got it. I’m still not sure. I personally

think that Teddy Daniels has always been sane and seemed to be playing along the institution’s so called game. I think that he wanted to go inside the tower, the lighthouse, where all the secrets lie, where the hospital’s surgeons carry out their experiments on people such as George Noyce.  So, I thought of starting this blog and, in some sort of way, dedicate this page to all Shutter Island film lovers. The truth is that it’s a brilliant film with a brilliant cast and the direction of the legendry Hollywood film director, Martin Scorsesse, has given the film the look and credit that it truely deserves.  If you are here reading this blog then it definately means that you like the film like many other Shutter Island (and Leonardo Dicaprio) fans.

I’m amazed, though not shocked, to find many other blogs/sites dedicated to Shutter Island’s ‘ending’. It makes me feel good, however, to realise the fact that I didn’t have a clue that other Shutter Island fans have somewhat similar shutter-island-endinng interests. In other words, I can claim that this is my own original idea of the blog on the film’s ending. I thought I was the only one to be fasinated as such about this amazing cinematic event but I’m glad I’m not.
